Harley-Davidson is issuing recalls for 8,060 FXDL Low Riders produced between January 6, 2014 and April 7, 2016, because of potentially damaged ignition switches. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration claim, engine vibrations could possibly damage internal electronics of the ignition switch. Power to the engine could be cut while the bike is in motion as a result, increasing the probability of an accident. A slight hesitation when accelerating through the 4500-5500 rpm range is reportedly an indicator of a fouled ignition switch.
Harley discovered the ignition switch issue while testing a new, unreleased model that uses the same ignition. There have been 70 warranty claims and two customer complaints pertaining to the ignition switch. Among those claims, no accidents have been reported.
Harley-Davidson is in the process of notifying owners of 2014.5 – 2016 model year Low Riders, the latest Low Rider released during Daytona Beach Bike Week 2014. Dealers will install an improved ignition switch free-of-charge. Low Rider owners can contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-800-258-2464 for more information.
